There is a piece or cork attached to the lid with 2 screws that connect to the wiper motor shaft through a metal piece and in the other side, below the jar, there are to small wheels, just to hold it. We routinely recommend two ways: coffee milling and ball milling. Both ways have advantages. To grind a single chemical (vs. a mix like black powder) using a ball mill, fill your mill jar half full of hardened lead or brass grinding media, and 25% full of potassium nitrate. Posted 27 April 2011 09:54 AM. The only way to know for sure is to take samples and test them. In my small mill, it happened that the clumping and done stages pretty much were at the same time. In my larger mill, it clumped well before it was done. You can't always take that as a definitive sign.

I made my own ball mill and use small chunks (.5" square) of aluminum for media. I test my BP by launching baseballs out of a 3" tube. 5 oz baseball .5 oz BP. A 4 hour mill goes 20 feet. One drum holds something like 4 ounces of black powder and 5 pounds of lead balls so that gets you to the 6pound load the motor is designed for. If you try to fill both drums you may well toast the motor. I suspect the people who complain about short life are either putting 6 pounds on a 3pound mill or 12 pounds on a 6pound mill.

Shop grade BBQ charcoal, is really slow, and can be only used for stars like C6, C8, and TT. Also it can be used for 6/3/1 rocket fuel, but might require serious ballmilling. BP with sulfur is much faster than sulfurless black powder, so getting sulfur would be best. Ballmill it for long enough (depends on the mill), then granulate it.

As far as ball mill safety goes, the motor should be completely separated from the milling area, so that no powder can get to the motor. Somewhere around here I reported my results with various sizes of SS media from 3/161/2" diameter spheres, using a 4" diameter mill jar to mill the charcoal. The potassium nitrate grinds better with the larger 1/2" media. The sweet spot for charcoal in my rudimentary testing was 5/16" diameter.
